UK Space R&D and Innovation Funding Calls: Now Open

A range of funding opportunities are currently available for UK-based organisations working across space R&D, innovation and commercialisation. 

Whether you're building next-gen satellite comms infrastructure, testing exploration technologies or developing breakthrough navigation systems, now is a strong time to apply.

Here is a summary of key open calls:

1. ARTES Call 2 – Satellite Gateway Innovation

Targeted funding under ESA’s ARTES programme to support emerging satellite communications infrastructure, with a focus on gateway technologies.

  • Eligibility: UK-based organisations (academia, industry, non-profits)
  • Funding: Up to £10 million total, approx. 5 projects of up to £2 million
  • Deadline: 22 May 2025
  • Note: This call does not include platform, payload or terminal development

 

2. Navigation Innovation Support Programme (NavISP)

Designed to support commercial innovation in Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) technologies.

  • Eligibility: UK organisations undertaking PNT-related R&D
  • Funding: Typically €200,000–€800,000, up to 100% funding available
  • Deadline: Rolling (open until further notice)
  • Additional info: Since 2017, €50m has been invested in UK PNT innovation via NavISP

 

3. General Support Technology Programme (GSTP)

Open support for innovative space technologies across UK industry and academia through ESA’s GSTP, including startups and SMEs.

  • Eligibility: UK organisations with ESA/UK Space Agency engagement
  • Deadline: Rolling
  • Collaborative applications encouraged

 

4. Responsive Mode Call – Space Exploration Community Development

Funding available to support UK exploration community activities such as networking, conference participation or community showcases.

  • Eligibility: UK individuals and organisations
  • Funding: Up to £50,000
  • Deadline: Open until further notice


5. Exploration Science Working Group Support

Funding support for academics contributing to mission-related groups and working teams.

  • Eligibility: Academics engaged in UKSA missions or campaign science
  • Funding: Up to £40,000
  • Deadline: Open until further notice

Note: Applications for UK support for activities that are in the ARTES 2025 Workplans are on hold pending funding reviews. Previously approved 2024 activities remain valid.
